EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is included in the kit?

A: Our kits comes very complete.  It comes with:

    • ECU w/mill-spec wiring harness.
    • Dual fuel pumps with built-in check valves and filter.
    • Wideband O2 sensor kit w/Bluetooth interface.
    • Coolant temp adapter, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum distribution manifold.
    • All AN-fittings with braided PTFE fuel hoses and high pressure fuel filter.
    • Intake assembly with throttle body, injectors and fuel rails.
    • Data communication cables and detailed installation instructions
Q: How many kits are installed and flying?

A: As per 01.08.2018 we have sold in excess of 450 kits.

Q: What is the fault rate on the EFI kits? Reliability of carburetor vs EFI?

A: We are extremely proud to say that it is close to 100%. We have only had one incident on one of the first kits we delivered. It was an injector terminal which had been over compressed while crimping and eventually it failed. The result was that the pilot felt vibrations due to the engine running on 3 of 4 cylinders. He made a safe landing, we flew out with a new harness and he continued his journey. The harnesses that comes with the kits today are built by a certified harness manufacture, made from the highest-grade mil-spec (Raychem DR-25) motorsport quality and components.

Q: What type of sensors are used, and are they reliably?

A: We use Bosch automotive intake air temp, manifold air pressure, coolant temp and crankshaft position hall sensors. And then we use Variohm TPS, and the ECU`s built in barometric sensor for altitude compensation. The reason for using Bosch is simply because they are made and tested by the millions, and they are easily accessible worldwide from any automotive spare parts store. Easy, simple and reliable.

Q: Is it difficult and time consuming to install the EFI kit?

A: In general, we install an EFI kit and its associated parts in 2-5 working days in our shop. Moreover, it varies a lot based on the fuel system, if you have a simple header tank, or if your aircraft requires a 6-way fuel selector and return fittings and line to be installed into each wing tank. However, other than that, it is simply a matter of removing the old parts from the engine, and bolting on the kit parts. Fuel lines are easily cut to length and are AN grade. All the electrical wiring comes pre-wired and labeled, plug & play.

Q: Does installing EFI add a lot of weight?

A: No, in most cases we see a 1-2Kg (2-4lbs) weight reduction, while in some case the similar weight increase all depending on the installation. But as you can see, there is a very small change in weight from carbs to EFI.

Q: What about the electrical consumption? Do I need a secondary alternator?

A: The entire EFI system draws approximately 8A. The 912/914 series engines has a built in Ducati 20A alternator. And extensive experience shows that on even modern planes with full LED lightning, electric constant speed propeller, electric flaps, electric retractable landing gear, EFIS, XPDR, COM etc. it is still sufficient with the stock 20A alternator. However, our 32amp external alternator is a nice add-on to any EFI installation.

Q: Does the kit come with installation manuals?

A: Yes, it sure does. It comes with a very nice manual with loads of pictures, text, diagrams and more.

Q: Do you offer a secondary alternator?

A: Yes, we have a bolt-on secondary 32A alternator with a separate regulator/rectifier making it totally independent and redundant

Q: How can I ensure the kit will fit my airframe?

A: Well, either we may have installed a kit on the same airframe, or we can supply both 2D dimensional and 3D CAD drawings. We also have 14 different intake designs and configurations to be adaptable to almost any aircraft, gyrocopter, helicopter etc.

Q: What do I need in addition to the kit is self to complete my installation?

A: It may vary from installation to installation, but if your plane does not have a header tank which you can run the fuel return line to, you may need to install fittings to the fuel tanks and preferably use an Andair 6-way fuel selector with supply and return to LEFT/RIGHT tank, and supply and return to and from the engine. Additionally, you will need some 14-16awg wiring for the fuel pumps, toggle switches for the ECU and fuel pump 1+2, and circuit breakers to go with them.

Q: Will the engine run with the calibration file that comes with the ECU?

A: Yes, the engine will start, idle and run just fine as it comes with a pre-loaded map from us. We have close to 100 different maps ranging from bone stock 912UL engines to 914-turbo engine, big bore engines and 177HP EP912STi engines. But for optimal fuel economy and power some fine tuning might be essential. This can either be preformed by the owners who has sufficient knowledge, your local EP Dealer or by us remotely.

Q: How do I get support and help if I encounter problems with the installation or tuning of the engine?

A: We have a growing fleet of dealers and distributors worldwide which can assist with anything you may need help with. We can also connect to your ECU by hotspot/Wi-Fi/4G remotely, and thereby controlling and tuning your ECU. We can also check for errors, engine log files etc.
